The Late Shows Culture in Newcastle Full Walk-Through with peep

peep take you on a cultural artistic journey with the Newcastle night life Late shows in Newcastle & Gateshead. We began our journey at The Start and Shadow Cinema, Warwick Street in Heaton NE2 1BB. To be honest the activities here, mainly consisted of ‘make and mend’ stalls with groups of woman all seemingly knowing each other. Never seen a DJ to be fair. Not really our thing, However, another great space with sanded concrete floors as a talking point. Incase you’re interested, peep have interviewed a few people at the Star and Shadow Cinema, including Jelly Jells, Byker Groove Disco Party, Blak Twang

Open Studios Newcastle at The Biscuit Tin Studios

The Biscuit Tin Studios on Warwick street, was a place I have walked by many times, but unfortunately, never had an opportunity to enter. I did know an artist who was wrongly accused of smoking crack cocaine, whilst washing his paint brushes, but he was swiftly ejected soon after. Another story completely. Ok, once in, we got chatting to a resident artist and Yoga Teacher ( Name) Name, explained to us in detail, about Yog-Art and the group participation of drawing pictures, in this case – skeletons. He also briefly mentions other artistic expressions such as ‘Hin-sai’ art, which compromises of ‘non attachment’ processes, which is known to release stress. Unfortunately, there were many studios within The Biscuit Tin Studios that were closed to the public. Incase you’re interested, peep have interviewed a vip graffiti artist right round the corner called Mr Zee. Real name Barry. the graffiti artist talks of traveling to the Graffiti mecca of New York whilst working with the youths of Newcastle upon tyne.

NCA Newcastle Contemporary Art, High Bridge Works, High Bridge Street, NE1 1EW

Now, this was getting interesting. peep are no strangers to the Newcastle Contemporary Art Gallery, as we documented an Alternative PUNK exhibition at this venue around one year ago. I was met with some critism for this particular gallery walkthrough as I referred to ‘punks’ as ‘Glue Sniffers’ I then refrained, and re-structured my comment by saying “not all punks” but, unfortunately it was not enough. The Punk Police quickly tracked my website and @peeppmagazine social media platforms down and complained. Full walkthrough Punk culture exhibition at Newcastle Contemporary art

The NCA Newcastle Contemporary Art Gallery. Deborah Bower performs – ‘No Last Dance’ for The Late Shows 2024

Ok, so this time round was a showcase of artwork called ‘No Last Dance’ this was produced by an old Northumbria University friend of mine called Deborah Bower. Deborah, was a fine art student at Northumbria University and occasionally popped into my technical film processes classes. We quickly hooked up again after all these years ! Cool eh ! Another part of her exhibition work was called ‘Seekers Rhythm’ which was a kind of animated collage of colours.

As we walked through Newcastle night life within the open studios of Newcastle Contemporary Art, we popped into another artist studio, which was run by a graphic designer called Adam Pointer ( adampointerart ). Adam, discusses his graphic art style and processes with peep. We also mention ‘Copyright is for Losers’ famously said by ‘Banksy’ who has later went on to exercise his own copyrighted trademark Graffiti artworks with people and galleries using his trademark work without his permission. I mean you couldn’t have made this up.

Just past High Bridge Street leads you directly onto Grey Street, to where non other than one of the greatest comedians ever to live – Billy Connolly. Yes, Billy Connolly was exhibiting his entire artworks within both floors of Castle fine Art Gallery NE1 6EF. The staff there were more than helpful, explaining some of the work featured, and a bit about the history of this fine art gallery space in the centre of Newcastle.

Fine Art At The Newbridge Project, Shieldfield, Newcastle Night Life Begins

The Newbridge project, The Shieldfield,NE2 1AL seemed to be one of the busiest activities at the Newcastle Late shows, featuring Newcastle University first year fine art students. The work on display was varied, with a few heavy influences from Jean-Michel Basquiat. Maybe it should be a fine art lecturers responsibility to explain to first year students, or any art students for that matter, to absolutely not try and paint like Basquiat ! You know the ones, with a golden crown thrown in for good measure. Maybe it’s me. Maybe it was a homage? You decide. Another interesting aspect of the New bridge project was a mini library that was tucked away in between the gallery spaces. The book that got our attention was called ‘The Demonization Of The Working Class’. To be honest it was a cool space with a selection of magazines from around the world that everyone seemed ignore. We then ventured upstairs to meet ‘George’, who specialised Screen Printing. This was Newcastle night life at the time and we wanted to explore more !

Ernest Cafe Bar, Ouseburn Farm. Newcastle Night Life

This was an interesting one. We were actually walking past the Ernest Cafe Bar, when we heard people shouting over from the outdoor seating area of the pub. Not being able to hear their calls, we quickly walked over, it turned out, it was four graduate students wanting to say hello ! The four lads had graduated from University that day, so they were out celebrating. If I remember correctly, two students studied engineering and one studied Geography. The remaining one, wanted to study ‘fine art’ but he didn’t want to teach it, and he basically didn’t want to delve into the commercial world of art. We kind of all left it there, and strolled onto to The Cobalt Studios Newcastle upon Tyne, Boyd Street, NE2 1AP. Unfortunately, The Cobalt Studios presented more of the same – printmaking and Screen printing.
